Preparing for Permanent Makeup The Do's and Don'ts!

Preparing for Permanent Makeup: The Do’s and Don’ts!

Are you waiting eagerly and excitedly for your permanent makeup appointment? Why wouldn’t you be?

However, going unprepared can be self-sabotaging.

A few simple precautions before and after your appointment can greatly impact the results.

Something as simple as avoiding skin exfoliation, wearing sunscreen, and being honest with your aesthetician can lead to perfect pigmentation and head-turning results.

In this article, we’ll tell you all the dos and don’ts you must follow before getting that permanent makeup solution you’ve always wanted.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup is a broad term used for all kinds of cosmetic procedures that involve tattooing pigment into the skin. The purpose is to enhance your features or to restore your natural appearance.

Experienced and certified artists use unique and specialized devices for different types of permanent makeup services, for better accuracy and more natural results.

Microblading and Oowder brows and Nano brows are very popular permanent makeup procedures.

In these treatments, aestheticians use a handheld tool or machine to create soft strokes on the brows, filling and shaping them for a natural appearance.

Other popular permanent makeup includes permanent eyeliner, lip blush, and areola tattoos.

Unlike traditional tattoos, in permanent makeup, the pigment isn’t injected too deeply, and the hues are matched to your skin tone and hair color.

When well taken care of, permanent makeup can last anywhere from two to five years.

The Do’s of Permanent Makeup

1. Consultation

Always schedule a consultation with the PMU artist before going through with the procedure.

This conversation allows you to convey your expectations and your concerns to the artist. This is also the perfect time to discuss your vision and your expectations.

This consultation will also give you some insight into the artist. Were they professional and polite? Did they answer all your questions without hesitation or irritation?

2. Follow Instructions

PMU artists have a specific list of pre and post-care instructions. These instructions are meant to guarantee your safety and optimum results.

Follow them down to a tee and you will enjoy the most perfect results.

These instructions help ensure that the pigment sets correctly and that you heal properly without complications.

3. Avoid Sun Exposure

Long exposure to the sun can fade the pigment of your permanent makeup, especially when it is fresh and hasn’t settled into your skin yet.

Even after that, sun exposure can speed up the discoloration process. Just make sure you protect your skin from sun exposure for the best results. Your best bet here is large hats and high SPF.

4. Stay Hydrated (for Lip Blush Procedures)

Keeping your lips exfoliated and moisturized before a lip blush treatment helps ensure the pigment is applied smoothly and evenly. Hydrated lips also heal faster and minimize dryness or cracking post-procedure.

Use a fragrance-free balm that is gentle on your lips. Apply it every night before bed and especially on the night before your appointment. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

5. Be Patient

Healing from a PMU procedure takes time, and the initial appearance may not reflect the final result. Your skin needs about 4 -8 weeks to fully heal, after that we do your perfecting session.

Avoid judging the final results until after the healing period. Be prepared for minor fading and possible patchiness initially, as this is part of the process.

The Don’ts of Permanent Makeup

1. Do Not Pick or Scratch

We know there’s a strong impulse to pick at the scabs once the permanent makeup begins to heal. However, picking or scratching the treated area can remove pigment, cause infection, and lead to scarring. Let the skin heal naturally to ensure the pigment sets properly and evenly.

2. Avoid Soaking

Saunas, early-morning swims, and long baths can wait until your permanent makeup is completely healed.

Submerging the treated area in water can introduce bacteria and dilute the pigment. Excess moisture can also slow down the healing process, leading to uneven results.

Stick to quick showers for at least two weeks.

3. No Blood Thinners

You must steer clear of all types of blood thinners before and after the procedure, as they can lead to excessive bleeding.

Stop using aspirin, alcohol, and vitamin E at least 24 hours before your appointment.

4. Avoid Active Skin Products

Actives and chemical peels are good for your skin at any time of the year, but not when your treatment is fresh.

Skincare products that contain retinol, acids, or other active ingredients can be too harsh on the treated area, causing the pigment to fade.

5. Avoid Excessive Sweating

Avoid any activity that will make you sweat.

Sweating causes the treated area to become tacky and wet, which can make the pigment transfer and smudge instead of setting in.

Even more dangerous is the bacteria that spread through sweat, increasing the risk of infection.

6. Do Not Lie About Conditions

Be true to yourself and your artist. And make sure you are transparent about your medical conditions, medications, and medical history.

Every small detail about your medical conditions will only ensure your safety and the success of the procedure.

Even if a health concern seems unrelated to the procedure, always tell your artist. They will adjust the procedure to your needs.
